The Seneca referred to the area as "Sehgahunda," meaning "Vale of Three Falls." William Letchworth’s former estate, Glen Iris Inn, now serves as a charming inn and restaurant, offering visitors the chance to stay within the park and enjoy its serene surroundings.

Recreational opportunities in Letchworth are abundant, with over 66 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging routes. Popular trails include the Gorge Trail, which runs alongside the river and offers close-up views of the waterfalls, and the Letchworth Trail, a longer, more rugged path for experienced hikers. Other activities include biking, horseback riding, kayaking, and even hot air ballooning for those seeking a bird’s-eye view of the park.

In winter, Letchworth State Park transforms into a snowy wonderland, offering snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The park is open year-round and attracts nearly one million visitors annually. Its combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational options makes it one of New York State's premier outdoor destinations, drawing visitors from all over the region and beyond.
